The Museum of Yachting This exhibit looks at the influence the New York Yacht Club and the competition of the America's Cup had on changing Newport RI into a summer resort for the influential of New York from 1850 - 1890. |
The Proposal Overview The existing space was broken down into 5 zones A considerable amount of research was done in conjunction with the New York Yacht Club in NYC as well as the Newport Historical Society, The Mystic Aquarium, and others. |
The Plan Each of the zones were broken down into wall, panel, kiosk, and artifact areas, inventory lists were created, and supporting text was generated. |
Existing space The exhibit had a very low budget. It had to be designed to occupy an existing small boat storage area. |
Computer design The existing space was measured and a 3-D computer model was made to accelerate the design process. |
Computer design The computer model was used to layout the flow of the exhibit as well as position artifacts, photos, display text, etc. |
Panels as built The pedestrian flow of the exhibit was controlled with free standing display panels connected nautical flags. These defined the individual topic zones while not being confining, (not to mention inexpensive). |
The display cases Several display cases were needed for sensitive / valuable artifacts They too were constructed, positioned to add to the open feel of the exhibit. |
Stand alone artifacts Several of the artifacts were displayed with the intension to allow people to touch the items. |

Over view photo This photo was taken from above to show the flow between the panels, display cases and artifacts on display. |
